As of August 19, 2026, iPhone Ultra is expected to be Apple’s first book-style foldable, with a 7.8-inch inner OLED and a 5.5-inch outer display. The most consistent reports from Bloomberg and MacRumors point to an A20 Pro chip built on a 2nm process, 12GB of RAM, Apple’s in-house C2 modem, a dual-cell battery with a 4,883mAh minimum rated capacity, and Touch ID integrated into the power button instead of Face ID. Rumored starting price is around $2,000, with a September 2026 debut alongside the iPhone 18 Pro line. Nothing has been confirmed by Apple.

What Is iPhone Ultra? Apple’s First Foldable Explained

iPhone Ultra is the rumored marketing name for Apple’s first foldable iPhone. If you have seen it called iPhone Fold or iPhone 18 Fold, it is the same project. The naming confusion comes from two different sources that landed on the same device.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman, who covers Apple, reported in April 2026 that Apple plans to use Ultra branding for this tier, similar to Apple Watch Ultra. Around the same time, early code strings in iOS 27 referenced an “iPhone Ultra” with foldable display states. That matters because it suggests Apple is already building the software side.

This is not a replacement for the Pro Max. It is a new line above it. Closed, it works as a compact iPhone. Opened, you get a canvas just under the size of an iPad mini. Once you understand that goal, most of the compromises in the leaks make sense.

    iPhone Ultra Rumored Specifications

The leaks have finally started to agree. After a noisy spring of conflicting dummy models, the display sizes, chip generation, and biometric change are now reported by multiple independent sources. What follows is the current consensus as of August 2026, with how reliable each claim is.

    Display and Design

The display sizes are the most settled part of the story. The inner OLED is now consistently described as 7.8 inches when unfolded, after earlier reports floated 7.7 inches. The outer cover display sits at 5.5 inches. That convergence came after dummy models circulated to case makers in April and were analyzed by MacRumors, and after front panel leaks covered by Notebookcheck matched those dimensions.

Apple is calling this a passport-style aspect ratio internally. The outer screen is close to an iPhone mini in size but wider, so you can actually use it without opening the phone. When you do open it, you get a nearly square inner display built for two apps side by side.

    Display and Design

Design-wise, Apple is reportedly chasing thinness above all else. Multiple reports describe a titanium frame and a folded thickness that feels like two iPhone Airs stacked, but thinner. One reason for that push is the crease. Samsung Display is said to be supplying a new crease-reduced panel built to Apple’s tolerance. You will still likely see a faint line under harsh overhead light in year one, you just should not feel it under your finger.

There is also a persistent, if less certain, note that Apple may launch with a single finish to simplify anodization and improve yields. That would be unusual for an iPhone, but it is exactly what Apple did with the first Apple Watch Ultra to control a complex new production line.

    Performance, RAM and Modem

The performance package is expected to be new across the board. The most credible reporting points to the A20 Pro, fabricated on TSMC’s 2nm process. For a foldable, the win here is not a higher benchmark number. It is efficiency. Two displays, even with LTPO, need a chip that can hold a lower voltage for longer.

That is also why RAM is moving up. Reports from TechRepublic and the supply chain now agree that 12GB will be standard across the 2026 Ultra and Pro models. On a foldable, that extra memory is not about keeping Safari tabs alive. It is about Apple Intelligence and keeping two full apps active on the inner screen without reloading.

On connectivity, iPhone Ultra is expected to carry Apple’s second-generation in-house modem, the C2. Gurman noted in April that this is part of Apple’s multiyear move away from Qualcomm. First-generation Apple modems traded peak download speed for better power draw. The C2 is expected to close that gap.

Thermal design is the quiet detail that makes all of this possible. MacRumors reported in June that Apple has prototyped a vapor chamber cooling system for the Ultra despite the thin body. Foldables have almost no room to spread heat. Without that chamber, sustained gaming or 4K editing on the inner display would throttle quickly.

    Battery, Camera and Biometrics

The battery is a dual-cell system, which is how all book-style foldables work. You cannot have one large cell with a hinge in the middle. The specific numbers that leaked were 1,921mAh for one cell and 2,962mAh for the other, for a combined minimum rated capacity of 4,883mAh. Rated minimum is the regulatory number. What Apple markets is usually a bit higher, often called typical capacity. Expect Apple to market this around 5,000mAh if the leak holds.

Even then, do not expect Pro Max endurance. A 5,000mAh battery driving a 7.8-inch inner OLED will be good, but the Pro Max with a single display will likely still last longer on a heavy day. iOS 27’s power management for foldables will matter more than the raw milliamp-hours.

Cameras are where Apple appears to be deliberately restrained. Leaks point to two rear cameras instead of three. The reason is physical. A large periscope telephoto module does not fit in a chassis that is aiming for under 5mm when open. You will probably get a main and ultrawide on the back, a front camera on the cover for quick FaceTime, and a second front-facing camera inside for when you are unfolded.

Biometrics are the biggest shift. The Ultra is widely expected to drop Face ID and use Touch ID in the power button instead. Both Gurman and analyst Ming-Chi Kuo have reported this, citing thickness. The TrueDepth array is simply too tall for the design Apple wants. On a foldable that you often unlock closed, a side button is actually faster. You press the button to open it anyway. It will feel different, but not necessarily slower.

On software, iOS 27 is where this device lives or dies. Code references found earlier this year suggest Apple is building real continuity between the two screens, not just stretching the iPhone UI. Start an email on the cover, open the device and it is already on the large canvas. That kind of hand-off is what makes a book-style foldable useful instead of just large.

    Expected Price and Release Date

The expected starting price is around $2,000 in the US, based on multiple reports citing supply chain pricing. For India, early reports have placed the base variant between Rs. 1,80,000 and Rs. 2,00,000. That puts it well above the iPhone 18 Pro Max and directly against the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 8.

That pricing reflects the display cost, titanium build, and hinge complexity. It also explains why Apple may limit colors and initial volume. This is not intended to be a high-volume iPhone in year one.

For timing, September 2026 is the date most credible sources have converged on. Gurman’s April 2026 report said the device is on track to debut alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max at the September event, with the caveat that production had not yet ramped and timing was not final. That caveat is important. With a new crease-reduced display, yields can shift quickly. A September reveal with constrained supply into early 2027 remains a realistic scenario.

Should You Wait for iPhone Ultra?

You should wait if you want one device that replaces an iPhone and an iPad mini. If your day involves reading long documents, editing sheets, or watching video while taking notes, the inner display will be more useful than any camera upgrade. You should also be comfortable with first-generation trade-offs: paying more, living without Face ID, and accepting that durability data for the hinge will take a year to mature.

You should buy the iPhone 18 Pro or Pro Max if cameras, proven durability, broader color choice, and better battery life per dollar matter more. The Pro Max will almost certainly have the more versatile camera system, including a telephoto that the Ultra’s thin body cannot fit. For most buyers, the Pro Max will be the more practical flagship.

If you are currently on a Galaxy Z Fold, the question is ecosystem. If you live in iCloud, Apple Watch, and Mac, the Ultra finally gives you a book-style option without leaving that continuity. If you are platform agnostic and value S Pen or open multitasking, Samsung will still have software advantages in year one.

    How Reliable Are These Rumors?

No iPhone Ultra specifications are official until Apple announces them. This page compiles leaks with a named source and date and rates them by track record.

High confidence as of August 2026: the 7.8-inch inner and 5.5-inch outer display sizes, reported by display analyst Ross Young and corroborated by MacRumors’ analysis of April dummy models and panel leaks. Medium-high confidence: A20 Pro on 2nm and 12GB RAM, which aligns with TSMC’s roadmap and Apple’s pattern of unifying RAM across Pro tiers for Apple Intelligence. Medium confidence: the 4,883mAh dual-cell rated minimum, vapor chamber cooling, and single finish at launch, which come from fewer isolated supply chain notes.

Common mistakes when reading these leaks: treating dummy models as final design, confusing rated battery capacity with typical marketed capacity, and assuming Face ID will return in a later leak. On thickness, Apple rarely reverses course. If Touch ID is in the power button now, it is in the power button at launch.

We maintain a transparent methodology. Every major claim above is tied to its original publication month. When a new credible report appears, we update the date at the top and revise the confidence rating. That transparency is why this page is cited by other publications.
