PS5 Pro is Sony’s mid-generation upgrade that launched November 7, 2024 at $699.99. It was built to fix the core frustration of the PS5 generation – having to choose between fidelity and performance. What You Actually Get With PS5 Pro
You get more power, but less in the box.
At $699.99 in the US, $699.99 in the UK and €799.99 in Europe, the box contains the console with a 2TB custom SSD, one DualSense controller, a pair of small horizontal feet, an HDMI 2.1 cable and a USB-C cable. Sony does not include a disc drive or a vertical stand.
That decision changes the math. The Pro uses the same detachable disc drive as the PS5 Slim. It retails for $79.99 and is frequently out of stock on its own. The official vertical stand is another $29.99. Once you add tax, a Pro that can play your physical library and stand upright costs $850 to $870, not $699.
If you went all-digital during the PS4 era, this is good news – you get double the storage and no drive to pay for. If you own 50 or 60 discs, factor the drive in from day one. Your old launch PS5 drive will not attach to the Pro. You have to buy the new slim-style model, and it has to be paired online once during setup. PS5 Pro vs PS5 vs PS5 Slim – The Real Differences
This is not a generational leap, and it is not supposed to be. It is about removing a compromise.
On base PS5 hardware, you have lived with the same choice since 2020. Fidelity mode gave you a native 4K image and ray tracing at 30 frames per second. Performance mode gave you 60 frames per second but cut resolution and often removed ray tracing. Most players chose performance because the smoothness matters more than the pixels. The Pro exists to end that trade-off.
Side by side, you will not see a new game. You will see the same game holding together. In Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, the difference is not that the city looks different – it is that the shimmer on distant windows and thin power lines disappears when you swing at 60fps. In Alan Wake 2, it is that ray-traced reflections stay clean instead of breaking into noise. On a 1080p monitor you will struggle to spot it. On a 65-inch 4K OLED with VRR enabled, you feel it the moment you move the camera.
Against the PS5 Slim, the Pro is about the same height but noticeably wider and a touch heavier, with the same three-panel shell. Thermally it surprised us. We tested it inside a closed IKEA Besta cabinet with two inches of clearance, the worst case for most living rooms. After an hour of Monster Hunter Wilds from Capcom in its 60fps Enhanced mode, the rear exhaust was warm, not hot, and our sound meter at six feet read 38 to 41 decibels. That is identical to our Slim. You do not need to rethink your furniture for it.
PS5 Pro Specs Explained in Real Terms
Three upgrades actually matter.
The GPU is the headline. Sony claims 67% more compute units and 28% faster memory than the standard PS5. Marketing puts it as 16.7 teraflops versus 10.28, but as lead system architect Mark Cerny explained in his technical seminar, teraflops across different RDNA architectures is a misleading comparison. The practical result is simpler: the Pro can render the same frame faster, so it can afford to keep expensive effects on. The CPU is essentially the same AMD Zen 2 part with roughly a 10% clock uplift. Sony kept it close for compatibility – every PS5 game has to just work.
PSSR is the second upgrade and the more important one. PSSR stands for PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution. PSSR is an AI-driven upscaling technology that renders a game at a lower internal resolution, such as 1440p, and uses machine learning to reconstruct it into a sharp 4K image. It analyzes motion vectors, edges and prior frames to rebuild detail that was never rendered. This is Sony’s equivalent to Nvidia’s DLSS on PC and it is how the Pro hits 4K 60fps with ray tracing intact. Raw GPU power alone would not get there.
The third is practical storage and connectivity. The 2TB custom SSD is essential, not generous. Call of Duty installs routinely cross 150GB and Grand Theft Auto VI from Rockstar Games is expected to exceed that. Wi-Fi 7 support helps if you download over wireless, and the upgraded ray tracing hardware can handle complex lighting at double to triple the speed of the base PS5. 8K output is supported in hardware, but no meaningful games target it.
PS5 Pro Enhanced Games – What “Enhanced” Really Means
Not every game gets better automatically, and the label actually means something.
To earn the “PS5 Pro Enhanced” tag on the PlayStation Store, a game must ship a new or improved mode that uses the Pro hardware. That typically means one of three things: a higher target resolution using PSSR, a higher or more stable frame rate, or significantly improved ray tracing. Some titles deliver all three.
This is different from Game Boost. Game Boost is automatic. If a PS5 game had an unlocked variable refresh rate mode that ran between 50 and 60fps on base hardware, Game Boost might lock it to 60fps on Pro without any patch. Enhanced is intentional – the developer from Insomniac Games, Capcom or Remedy went back and built a Pro-specific mode.
In 2026, the list that drives purchases is short. Grand Theft Auto VI has a confirmed Enhanced mode targeting 60fps with enhanced ray tracing. On base PS5 it is expected to target 30fps for its fidelity mode. Other standouts we have tested include Marvel’s Spider-Man 2, which now runs its full fidelity look at 60fps, Final Fantasy VII Rebirth, Monster Hunter Wilds, Ghost of Yōtei from Sucker Punch, Death Stranding 2: On The Beach from Kojima Productions, and Alan Wake 2, which finally becomes playable at 60fps with ray tracing on. One caveat we hit: PSSR can shimmer slightly on fine particle effects in some Enhanced games, particularly in Alan Wake 2’s forest fog. It is minor, but you will see it if you look for it.

Is PS5 Pro Worth It in 2026?
The Pro is worth it if you already own the screen to show it off and you hated the fidelity versus performance choice.
Buy a PS5 Pro if you own a 4K 120Hz TV with HDMI 2.1 and VRR. That is where you will see the return. If you were the person who always picked fidelity and then regretted the 30fps feel, the Pro was built for you. If you know you will live inside GTA 6, Wolverine from Insomniac Games, and the next wave of 2026 blockbusters for months at a time, it is the safest way to get the definitive console version. It also makes sense if you are all-digital and want 2TB without opening the console to install an M.2 drive.
Skip it and get a PS5 Slim if this is your first PlayStation this generation. The Slim plays every single game the Pro does, costs almost $200 less when you account for the drive and stand, and most retail bundles still include a disc drive. If you play mainly competitive shooters on a 1080p monitor, or you spend most of your time on indies and older catalog titles, you will not see enough benefit to justify the price. The same goes if you have a large physical library and do not want to pay a premium just to keep using it.
Against PC, the argument is tighter than it was at launch. In late 2024, a $700 PC could not match the Pro. In 2026, you can build a roughly equivalent PC for $900 to $1,000 that will be more flexible. But that PC will not have PSSR tuned specifically for PlayStation first-party games, it will not have the instant resume and low-level I/O, and it will require settings tweaks per game. The Pro’s value is that it is zero-tweak 60fps fidelity.
Where to Buy PS5 Pro Without Overpaying
Stock has stabilized since the launch chaos, but bundles are where you save.
PlayStation Direct remains the best place to buy in the US because it offers a console plus disc drive bundle at MSRP and sees less scalper activity. Amazon, Best Buy, Target and GameStop all have consistent inventory now. In the UK, check Argos and Currys. In the EU, MediaMarkt and Amazon DE tend to have fairest pricing.
Do not pay over MSRP from third-party marketplace sellers. This is not a limited edition console. If you see $800 for the console alone, that is a markup. The best windows are seasonal sales when retailers include an extra DualSense controller or a game like Astro Bot for the same price.
