Samsung Galaxy S26 Ultra Release Date and Availability

The Galaxy S26 Ultra is already on sale worldwide. Samsung announced it on February 25, 2026 at Galaxy Unpacked in San Francisco, per Samsung Newsroom. Pre-orders opened that evening and retail sales began March 11.

Unlike previous years, there was no staggered delay. The US unlocked model SM-S948U and global model SM-S948B hit shelves in the same week. If you are buying in September 2026, availability is stable and launch bundles have been replaced by carrier trade-in cycles.

How Much Does the Galaxy S26 Ultra Cost?

The Galaxy S26 Ultra costs $1,299 in the US for 12GB RAM and 256GB storage. That holds the line from last year despite rising LPDDR5X costs.

You have four real choices. The 512GB model is $1,419, the 1TB is $1,659, and Samsung.com sells 16GB / 512GB and 16GB / 1TB variants for about $100 more than their 12GB counterparts. Most people should buy 12GB / 512GB. That was the free storage upgrade during pre-order and remains the sweet spot for video and AI features.

If you missed pre-order, do not wait for a permanent price cut. Samsung never cuts Ultra pricing until the next Ultra leaks. The best windows are Prime Day and Black Friday when carriers bundle Galaxy Buds 4 Pro. All models include a standard one-year warranty with 30-day returns via Samsung.com.

Design: What’s Actually Changed From S25 Ultra?

The S26 Ultra is not a redesign. It is a refinement that fixes weight and heat.

It is 8.2mm thin and 214 grams, down from 232 grams on the S25 Ultra. That 18-gram drop matters in one-handed use. Samsung also switched the frame back from titanium to enhanced aluminum. That is not a downgrade. Aluminum dissipates heat better from the larger vapor chamber, which is why sustained performance is better this year. It is still IP68 rated and uses Corning Gorilla Armor 2 on the front with almost no reflections.

The clear visual tell is the camera. Samsung dropped the individual floating rings used since the S22 Ultra. Now there is a single, shallow camera island. It wobbles less on a table and does not collect dust around the rings. The dummy units that leaked in January 2026 were accurate.

Colors are subdued. Standard retail: Black Shadow, White Shadow, Galactic Blue, Cobalt Violet. Samsung.com exclusives: Silver Shadow and Pink Gold. Black and white hold resale value best.

Display: 6.9-Inch QHD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X with Privacy Display

The display is a 6.9-inch 3120 x 1440 Dynamic LTPO AMOLED 2X that runs from 1Hz to 120Hz. Samsung moved to the new M14 OLED stack with a CoE depolarizer. Per Samsung Display, that stack hits about 2600 nits peak while using less power, which is why battery life improves despite the same capacity.

The new feature is Privacy Display, internally called Flex Magic Pixel. This is hardware, not a software blur. The panel can electrically narrow the viewing angle for specific areas of the screen. When you pull down notifications or open a banking app, that portion blacks out for anyone viewing from the side. Someone next to you on a train sees a dark rectangle, not your OTP.

When Privacy Display is off, there is no downside. Brightness and color accuracy are identical to a normal panel. Use it on Auto for sensitive apps only. If you enable it system-wide, you will block people trying to watch video with you. That is the most common mistake early buyers make.

Performance: Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 Power

The Galaxy S26 Ultra is powered by Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 for Galaxy, model SM8850-AC, built on 3nm. It has two prime cores at 4.6GHz and six efficiency cores at 3.62GHz with an Adreno 840 GPU.

There is no Exynos variant for the Ultra. Per FCC filings A3LSMS948U and SM-S948B published in January 2026, the Ultra is Snapdragon in every region including Europe. The base Galaxy S26 and S26+ still split between Snapdragon and Exynos 2600 in some markets, but if you buy Ultra, you get Snapdragon.

Samsung paired it with a vapor chamber that is about 20% larger and LPDDR5X RAM running at 10.7Gbps. The result is not just higher benchmark scores but sustained speed. A 4K timeline export or a 30-minute Genshin session does not throttle the way S25 Ultra did. It ships with Android 16 and One UI 8.5, with seven years of OS and security updates.

If you are choosing between 12GB and 16GB, get 12GB unless you edit 8K footage on-device daily. UFS 4.0 storage is already so fast that extra RAM does not change app opening times for most people.

Camera System: 200MP Main Camera with f/1.4 Aperture

The main camera still uses the 200MP ISOCELL HP2 with OIS, but the lens is what changed. Samsung moved from f/1.7 to f/1.4, which lets in 47% more light per Samsung’s own measurement. That is meaningful. You get cleaner low-light shots with less reliance on night mode stacking and more natural background separation without portrait mode.

The rest of the system is now consistent. There is a 50MP ultrawide with autofocus for macro, a 50MP 5x periscope at f/2.9 with new coatings to reduce flare, and a new 12MP 3x telephoto replacing the older 10MP unit. The 3x to 5x range was the weak spot on the S24 and S25 Ultra. Now it holds texture instead of smearing.

Video goes to 8K at 30fps and, for the first time, the telephoto lenses can record in 8K as well. The front camera remains 12MP but now shoots 4K 60fps with improved skin tones. Best practice is to shoot 4K 30fps in low light. 8K is excellent for cropping but still generates heat quickly.

A common mistake is shooting 200MP full-time. Leave the camera in default 12MP binned mode. You get better dynamic range and files that are 1/10th the size. Use 200MP only in bright daylight when you plan to crop heavily later.

    Battery Life and Charging Speed

The Galaxy S26 Ultra has a 5,000mAh battery with 60W wired charging and 25W Qi2 wireless charging with magnetic support.

Per FCC filing A3LSMS948U, the rated typical capacity is 5,000mAh. That corrects early leaks that claimed 5,200mAh and 5,500mAh. Real-world endurance is still better than S25 Ultra. The M14 panel and Elite Gen 5 chip draw less power at the same brightness.

Wired charging moves from 45W to 60W. In testing with a 5A PPS charger, it reaches about 75% in 30 minutes and 100% in 55 minutes, roughly 25 minutes faster than last year. Wireless charging moves from 15W to 25W and adds full Qi2 magnetic support, so standard magnetic wallets, stands and car mounts work without a special case.

If your unit is not hitting 60W, check the cable and brick. You need a 5A PPS-compatible charger and cable. Many 100W cables are not PPS 5A, and old Samsung 45W bricks cap at 45W. Leave Adaptive Charging on for overnight charging to protect long-term health.

Software: One UI 8.5, Android 16 and Galaxy AI

One UI 8.5 on Android 16 is a refinement, not a redesign. Animations are smoother and widget stacking is smarter, but the important changes are under the hood.

With the Elite Gen 5 NPU, Galaxy AI features like Live Translate, Note Assist and the over-shoulder detection that triggers Privacy Display now run on-device. That makes them faster and usable without signal.

The S Pen is still integrated, despite rumors it would be removed to make the phone thinner. Latency is down to 1.8ms and Samsung Notes now has AI handwriting cleanup that actually works for messy writing.

At Unpacked, Samsung launched the S26 Ultra alongside Galaxy Buds 4 and Buds 4 Pro with LE Audio and Auracast, which pair instantly with the Ultra.

Galaxy S26 Ultra vs Galaxy S25 Ultra: Is It Worth the Upgrade?

If you own a Galaxy S25 Ultra, this is not a must-buy. The design is familiar, the battery capacity is identical, and the sensor is the same generation. You are paying for a brighter f/1.4 lens, a genuinely useful Privacy Display, faster charging and better sustained performance.

The upgrade makes sense from an S23 Ultra or S24 Ultra. You get a lighter phone, a brighter anti-reflective display you can actually see outdoors, a fixed 3x to 5x zoom range, faster charging and a fresh seven-year support window. For S23 Ultra owners, the low-light jump from f/1.7 to f/1.4 is immediately visible.

If you are on an S22 Ultra or older, or switching from iPhone, this is the most complete Ultra Samsung has made because it finally fixes the three complaints that kept coming up: weight, regional chip split and slow charging.

Pros and Cons at a Glance

What stands out is how refined the whole package feels. The display is class-leading and Privacy Display is one of those rare features you keep on. Performance is top of Android without having to check which chip your country gets. The camera is now consistent from 0.6x to 5x and low light is meaningfully better.

The compromises are that battery capacity did not grow while Chinese rivals push 5,500mAh to 6,000mAh, the design will feel too familiar if you just bought an S25 Ultra, and the 1TB model remains very expensive.

Who Should Buy the Galaxy S26 Ultra?

Buy it if you want the best Android phone for photography, outdoor viewing and S Pen productivity without researching chip variants.

It is ideal for low-light shooters, frequent travelers who need that anti-reflective screen and power users who want Qi2 magnetic accessories to just work.

Skip it if your S25 Ultra still lasts a full day. Wait for a holiday bundle or hold for the S27. If you are on an S23 Ultra or older, this is the generation Samsung built for you.

Bottom line: The Galaxy S26 Ultra is the best Android phone for S Pen users and low-light photographers in 2026, but S25 Ultra owners can safely skip.
